Short Story Sunday: Gretchen & The Gloom
GRETCHEN & THE GLOOM
The witch in the woods, by the town of Gold Rock, was stirring a brew when along came a knock.
“Help me, please”, cried the voice at the door, “I’m in need of a fix for this awful footsore”.
Gretchen, you see, had powers like few, she worked with the flowers and plants that she grew.
Mixing them into her cauldron to bubble, she could create a potion to solve any trouble.
From far and from wide, ill people would flock, to the witch in the woods outside of Gold Rock.
Seeking solutions for pains, or an ache, they just kept on coming to take, take, take, take.
Taking her potions, not leaving a cent, before Gretchen knew it, her magic was spent!
With her energy drained, the witch fell unwell, but how would she mend herself without a spell?
The sky went grey, and no flowers would bloom, that was the day that Gold turned to gloom.
“What can be done?” the townspeople pleaded, “Without the Sun, we’ll all be defeated!”
Just then, a light rose, embracing the dark, an idea that glowed like a luminous spark.
From the mouth of a girl in a blue knit sweater, came the words, “we must help the sick witch get better!”
The citizens knew that they had to succeed, for this curse had been cast by their very own greed.
Without spells, or tricks, or a magic elixir, they pondered, and plotted a plan that might fix her.
To show they were grateful, and prove that they cared, a grand harvest feast was arranged, and prepared.
While the waning moon reigned from it's throne up high, they worked until dawn came to claim back the sky…
Out in the woods, the witch slept all day, hiding in dreams from the gloom and the grey,
when just like before, along came a knock, and behind the door was the girl from Gold Rock.
“We’ve laid out a spread, a most wonderful meal, so rise from your bed, and we’ll help you heal”.
Gretchen was shocked, and warmed to the bone, for a kindness like this, she never had known.
An offer so sweet, she couldn’t turn down, so she went on her feet to the feast in town.
What happened next was a sight to behold, the clouds gave way to a ray of gold,
and the warmth that Gretchen was feeling within, soon began spreading all over her skin.
Sunlight beamed through on the pumpkins and pies, the townspeople jumped with joy and surprise.
It was then that the witch of the woods knew for sure, that the people of Gold Rock had found her a cure.
